Curriculum Vitae
Werner Goebl is a music researcher with background in musicology, psychology, and computer science. After completing his master in musicology and psychology as elective at the University of Vienna (1999), he studied with Richard Parncutt and earned his PhD in Systematic Musicology from the Institut für Musikwissenschaft of the University of Graz (2003). Parallel to this, he pursued his piano performance studies at the "Mozarteum" in Salzburg and the University of Music in Vienna, from which he received a Master of Arts in piano chamber music performance in 2004 (Joseph Haydn Institute for Chamber Music and Special Ensembles with Avedis Kouyoumdjian).
For over six years, he worked in Gerhard Widmer's Intelligent Music Processing Group at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI) and later also at the Department of Computational Perception of the Johannes Kepler University Linz (2008–2009). Awarded an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), he joined Caroline Palmer's Sequence Production Lab at McGill University between 2006 and 2008, where he addressed the kinematics of finger motion in piano performance, the relationship between proprioceptive information and temporal accuracy in performance, and the role of auditory feedback in synchronization of ensemble timing. In 2009, he joined the faculty of the Institute of Musical Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
