Neue Mitarbeiterin: Julia Jaklin

New Project staff member @IWK
16.04.2026

We are happy to welcome our new project staff member, Julia Jaklin, to the IWK! In her role, she will contribute to the IWK's research activities in the field of "Digital Music Research", working closely with Dr David M. Weigl and Prof. Dr Werner Goebl, and will be involved in the FWF-funded project "Let's Encode!" (PAT 2277625; duration 2026–2029). As part of ongoing and planned future research projects, she will contribute to the development of technical concepts and tools for digital music research at the IWK. Her work will focus in particular on music encoding, FAIR-compliant and decentralised data infrastructures, and semantic web technologies. We wish her every success in her new role and hope she enjoys her new workplace!

In the course ‘Musikwissenschaftliches Praktikum’ the students programmed our industrial robot UR5 to play some notes on a guitar

Course Sound-Lab Skills

Do you study IGP? Join us in October for our Sound-Lab Skills course! The following video provides some examples of the group projects from the last years of the course. The course focuses on developing practical skills for analysing the sound of musical instruments and their playing techniques.

Polytec LDV

Expansion of technical infrastructure @IWK
25.02.2026

Our Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil is delighted to announce a significant expansion of its technical infrastructure: we now have access to Polytec's VibroScan QTec laser Doppler vibrometer. This high-precision measurement technology allows vibrations to be measured without contact and with maximum accuracy. The new system opens up expanded possibilities for us in experimental research and will play an important role, particularly in demanding measurement tasks and future research projects. Our employees have also received comprehensive training from LB-acoustics in order to be able to make optimal use of the new system's full potential.

PhD Guest visitor

Guest visitor @IWK
24.02.2026

We are very pleased to welcome the visiting researcher Aimar Yeregui Bacaicoa from the Universidad Pública de Navarra (UPNA), Department of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics, to our institute. As part of his research stay, he delivered a presentation entitled "Engineering Human Performance: From Clinical Rehabilitation to Instrumental Motion Analysis". The talk was given within the framework of his PhD studies and provided exciting insights into his current research work. The presentation was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to attend both in person and online.

Lecture series: Music and Digital Humanities

Distinguished lecture series: Music and Digital Humanities
16.02.2026

The Distinguished Lecture Series 'Music and Digital Humanities' at mdw invites leading international experts in diverse aspects of DH to share their perspectives with our students, faculty, and community. The series is aimed at a broad, non-technical audience. It provides a varied overview of the history and current state of DH as it applies to music, its philosophical underpinnings and societal implications, and is expected to yield insights into relevant methodologies, technologies, infrastructures, and applications working with humanities datasets. Topics include data management and computational analysis for digital musicology, digital editions, DH and artificial intelligence, machine learning and music information retrieval, as well as pedagogy, science communication, and citizen science. The series is convened by Chanda VanderHart, PhD and David M. Weigl, PhD, digital musicology researchers at the mdw's department for Music Acoustics — Wiener Klangstil, and organized in collaboration with the mdw's department of Musicology and Performance Studies. Visit the lecture series starting 02.03.2026.
