Vasileios Chatziioannou (aka wasilakis) was born in Thessaloniki, where he obtained his degree in Mathematics in 2004. He carried out his MSc in Applied Mathematics in Edinburgh, which was concluded by a dissertation "On axisymmetric flows with no swirl". He moved to Belfast in 2006 to start his PhD, working on the "Extraction of Physical Model Parameters from Music" project at the Sonic Arts Research Centre. His thesis, entitled "Forward and inverse modelling of single reed woodwind instruments with application to digital sound synthesis" addresses the estimation of physically meaningful parameters that can be used to resynthesise a recorded sound performed under real playing conditions.
Since February 2010 Vasilis works at the Institute of Music Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Besides physical modelling and numerical analysis further research interests include fluid dynamics, dynamical systems and football coaching.
